A lot of people that I have run into over the years still do not know what to do in the event of a vehicle accident. Here I am going to go over the basics of what should be done when you have a vehicle accident.
Please remember that depending on the severity of the accident your involved in the things I am going to run through are not always possible.
When you’ve been involved in an accident you never admit fault to the accident even if you are at fault. Rather let it be proved to have been your fault.
Then take down the details of the other car involved. The type of car, the color, the license plate number. Take note of the damages to the other car as well. There are unfortunately people on this world who have further damages to their car and try and claim these damages to be your fault.
Take the particulars of the other driver. Name, Surname, ID number, and contact details. Also if possible try and get his/her insurance details as well. Who they’re insured with and what their policy number is.
Also read over your own policy documents so that if you are involved in an accident you know who is allowed to tow your car. Most insurance companies have a specific towing company who is allowed to tow your car. If you use a towing company that is not registered with your insurance company you may be liable for towing and storage costs.
Always report the accident to the authorities and your insurance company within 24 hours of the accident. If the accident is not reported in time your claim could be repudiated.
If possible take down the details of the accident. Take note of where the vehicles are positioned after the accident. Take note of where the accident took place. The street name or names and where about in that specific street as well as which area you are in at the time. The more information you can gather at that tine the easier it is at a later stage.
Taking all this information down at the time of the accident could save you a lot of time and money at a later stage. As I mentioned before it is not always possible to get all of this information due to certain uncontrollable circumstances like if the accident is severe and you are needed to be taken to hospital etc. but the more information you can get at the time the better.
